To Tuck or Not To Tuck
To tuck or not to tuck? That is the question.
This dilemma has faced men of all ages since the untucked look became popular in the 80s, and even more so in the 90s with the grunge movement. It really comes down to what you're doing, where you’re going, and what personal statement you want to make with how you wear your shirt. Sure, there are old rules about the way the bottom of the shirt is cut shows you whether or not you should tuck. However, said grunge movement changed that standard forever, making almost every shirt a tuck/no tuck dilemma.
To make it easier we developed a baseline:
— A collared shirt with anything other than jeans or shorts: you should most likely tuck.
— If your shirt doesn't have a collar: don’t tuck.
— T-shirt and jeans: don’t tuck, we are no longer in the 40s or 50s.
— If you are at work (provided you don't work at a start up company), your boss probably shouldn't be seeing your shirt tails: tuck.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW...
If you are tucking anything and your slacks have belt loops, it is the cardinal rule that belt or suspenders must be worn. If you don’t, you will look like you don't know how to dress yourself, and, as mentioned many times on this site, a gentleman always knows how to dress.
